Tech Age Teens Launches in Atyrau

Half of the group, teachers of informatika (computer science), learned information and communication technology (ICT) skills. The other half gained community service projects, leadership, effective communication, and team-building.

After the training, teachers established after-school clubs, consisting mostly of eighth-grade students, in over 30 schools. Each teacher is leading the children through the same courses IREX taught the teachers in April. Most teachers are providing status reports to IREX and following the training plan, though it can be a challenge to keep some teachers as active with the many competing demands for their time.

The international ICT trainer taught teachers to complete the work of installing the local area network connections at the schools and preparing the computers for use beyond the stale informatika curricula. The b arrage of technical problems led IREX

to assemble and train a team of students to assume responsibility for helping the teachers to improve and maintain their computer classrooms. As a result of the cooperation, the computer classrooms are ready not only for the project, but also for further advanced ICT at the schools for other students and teachers.

With support from the Akimat, IREX increased the internet speed at the Slanov Oblast Library and expanded their local network to increase internet access. IREX is training librarians in ICT with the goal of making the library more popular through better service. Students from some schools without computers and internet are using the library computer center to complete the ICT training of Tech Age Teens.

By June 20, students will launch community projects to serve the less fortunate in their communities, using a mix of their leadership and ICT skills. Students are preparing for community projects partially online, communicating with each other on www.atyrau.ning.com and conducting research.
